Lectors at St. Peter's lead the two readings and the prayers of the people at the 10:30 a.m. Sunday service.
The co-ordinator is Sallie Craig Huber
St. Peter’s Lector Schedule March-May 2010
Please check the schedule and make a note of the dates you are scheduled to read or lead the Prayers of the People. If you are unable to participate in the service on the scheduled date, please arrange to exchange dates with someone else listed and inform both me and Sue Grundy (parishadmin@stpeterscambridge.org or 617 547-7788) so that the correct names can be listed in the bulletin. Many thanks for your contribution in this important ministry and remember:
“Therefore the scriptures should only be read in an attitude of prayer; trusting to the inward working of the Holy Spirit to make their truths a living reality within us.”

Lector Hints and Habits
Thank you once again for your willingness to serve as a lector. As we enter a new cycle in the calendar and as we have recently had some turnover in our numbers, I thought it would be an appropriate time to attach the following guide to lay reading which was originally created by Bill Edwards. I know that these guidelines are already closely adhered to by the majority but please take the time toread them carefully and gradually incorporate practices as necessary into your own service. Please contact Sallie Craig Huber with any comments or questions at shuber@msh.orgor617 244-0843 or if you know of anyone else who would like to become a lay reader.
1) Lector schedule arrives!
a) look closely for your name
b) mark dates on calendar
c) arrange for a substitute and inform Sallie Craig Huber (see above) and Sue Grundy at St. Peter’s (parishadmin@stpeterscambridge.com or 617 547-7799) so that the correct names can be noted in the bulletin
2) The week before you read:
a) email or call lector coordinator to confirm you can read
b) read over your lesson (they are listed in the previous week’s bulletin or you can call the parish office to learn which lessons are scheduled)
· think, meditate, and pray about what God is saying to you through it
--are their recurrent symbols in the passage?
· think about how to express the emotions of the reading with your voice
--does the passage express joy, frustration, anger, bewilderment?
· practice reading the lesson aloud
--use the guidance of punctuation; pause at commas, periods, etc.
3) Sunday morning:
a) dress appropriately - don’t let what you’re wearing distract from the lesson you’re reading
b) arrive early (before the service)
· check that the appropriate reading is at the lectern (they will be marked)
· Prayers of the People - check which form is listed in the bulletin
c) read over the lesson again
4) Immediately before your reading
a) leave your bulletin at your pew (remember you earlier checked the lectern and the print is larger in the lectionary!)
b) bring your service leaflet with you if you are reading the Prayers of the People
c) move up to the first row of the pews in advance of the reading
· as we finish the Collect if you’re doing the 1st Reading
· as we finish the Psalm if you’re doing the 2nd Reading
· as we finish the Nicene Creed if you’re doing the Prayers of the People
This helps with the overall flow of the service and reassures everyone that the reader is present!
5) Approaching the lectern
a) make sure you reverence the altar both approaching and leaving
6) At the lectern
a) take a moment to catch your breath and get comfortable before starting to read
b) adjust the microphone to your mouth level and speak directly into the microphone
· but pretend it’s not there
· project your voice to declaim the lesson
· maintain a steady volume - Cecil will adjust the volume as necessary
c) only read the italicized print - it is not necessary to read the chapter and verse numbers as people have it in front of them in their bulletins
d) pause between the introduction to the lesson and the lesson itself
e) pause after the lesson and before ending the lesson with “The Word of the Lord”
· pauses provide you an opportunity to focus on the text
· pauses also provide you an opportunity to make eye contact with the congregation
f) PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE
· give the congregation plenty of time to add their own petitions
--wait for seven seconds of continuous silence
· the prayers of the people end with a collect said by the celebrant (i.e. François)
--for the confession, move into one of the pews by the lectern
--return to your seat as people move about to exchange the Peace
7) Hallelujah - thus ends another service with lay reading!
